Injured Reserve Benefit:

A Benefit for all the Fallen Soldiers:

John Maguire benefit
Tent. Date sat. May 10th
@Redsand bowl
Encinitas,Ca
About a week and a half ago (apx . Feb. 26th) a good friend of the San Diego skate scene was injured in a skateboarding accident. John Maguire is an Encinitas local that has earned himself the reputation not only as a skater but an artist, musician, comedian, and all around good human being. John is most recognized for his artwork with Invisible Skateboards and Sixteen Skateboards. John had been working in the industry for awhile and due to industry cutbacks he was let go and is without insurance and was with out it at the time of the accident. John cracked his knee cap in half and will half to have surgery that use wires to hold his knee cap in one piece. He will then undergo apx. 6 months of therapy to get back to normal walking conditions.

As a response to this tragedy (and many others like it) I have decided to throw a benefit/ contest/ jam to help relieve some of the financial strain of John’s situation. I sent out an email describing the situation to many of my friends in the industry and the response has been overwhelming. Because of the amount of response, what I thought would be fairly simple, has turned into quite an event. This has also prompted me to find out a way to not just help John but other skaters who face similar situations. I am in the process of finding out how to start a non profit foundation (for now titled “skaters without insurance” or SWOI) that can continue to benefit skaters for years to come.
The proposed event will be held at the Redsand bowl in Encinitas, Ca. on Sat. May 10th. The event will be a contest/jam featuring area pro and am skateboarders. There will be a $10 donation for entry, which will include a raffle ticket. The raffle tickets will also be sold at $5.00 a piece after entry. Being raffled off will be product from various companies and individuals. The event will be open to the public and will be advertised (as of now) with Transworld business, 411 vm, local San Diego skate shops, and companys.

Phoenix AZ:

2nd Annual Phoenix Am Skateboard Contest! Circa Shoe Co. sponsors 2nd Annual Phoenix Am Skateboard Contest!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix, AZ - April 5 & 6, 2003 - Desert West Skateboard Plaza will be holding it's second annual amateur skateboard contest on April 5 & 6, 2003. Last year's 1st Annual Phoenix Am was a huge success with over 1200 spectators and contestants from across the globe. This year, Circa Shoe Co. and several other skateboard industry sponsors are providing their support. Media coverage of this event will include Thrasher magazine, and Slap magazine. This contest will provide a way for the City of Phoenix and the Skateboard Enthusiasts to raise funds for additions to the skate park. In the past three years, over $35,000 has been raised through entry fees, donations and concessions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The park is located at 6501 W. Virginia Ave. The contest will be held from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturday, April 5 and from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday, April 6. To raise additional funds, a $3 spectators donation will be charged at the gate and concessions will be sold the through out the weekend.

One hundred riders will be accepted for the Qualifiers on April 5. All riders must have a legitimate industry sponsor and the top 35 of these qualifiers will skate in the semi-finals April 6. Only ten riders will be selected to compete in the finals on Sunday afternoon. In addition, a Best Trick contest will commence on Sunday with Zero Skateboards sponsoring the $1000 prize. Banner space and advertising packages will be available for purchase prior to the event. All proceeds from this contest will go directly to the Desert West Skateboard Plaza.

There have been 15 contests at the Desert West Skateboard Plaza since opening on May 31, 1997. The proceeds of one contest were donated to the Paradise Valley Skate Park. Each contest has approximately 200 riders of all levels of age and skill. Most of the contests have experienced media coverage by the following magazines, television, video, and publications: Thrasher, Transworld, Slap, Logic #1 and #11(DVD), Think Skateboards Free At Last, Underdog, ABC, KTVK, Good Morning Arizona, Phoenix New Times, Arizona Republic. Desert West Skateboard Plaza is for skateboards only and it is the only free public park of it's kind in the country. A dedicated committee of skateboarders and the City of Phoenix worked together to put this park into the ground. Local skateboarders raised funds by holding skateboard contests on basketball courts and having concerts at local clubs. The City of Phoenix matched the funds and the first public skateboard park in Phoenix became a reality. During it's early years, skateboarders traveled to Desert West from all parts of the country, which prompted the growth of similar parks in Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Flagstaff, Paradise Valley and coming soon...Glendale and Ahwatukee.
